Abandonment
in law, is the relinquishment or renunciation of an interest, claim, privilege, possession or right, especially with the intent of never again resuming or reasserting it.Such intentional action may take the form of a discontinuance or a waiver.

ABC Classification
A categorization of inventory items by one of a variety of considerations, e.g. annual usage or financial worth.

Absolute Liability

Acceptance
A defined procedure or script developed mutually between a customer and supplier that is used to determine project success and completion. This is typically used to trigger the final payment for a project.

Acceptance Test Plan
An HK Systems document that specifies the test requirements necessary to determine that the functions and performance levels specified in the contract are achieved.

Access Codes
A unique set of digits or characters assigned to a user to allow access to specific operations within the system.

Access Level
An indication of the degree of access that a person has to a computer system. This typically is shown by a numeric value with 9 indicating the least amount of access and 1 indicating access to the most sensitive information.

Accessorial Charges
Large parcel carriers, such as United Parcel Service (UPS) and FedEx, often include an array of accessorial charges (like fuel and residential delivery surcharges) in addition to their standard fees. The US Postal Service (USPS) offers low-cost options for small package delivery to the home, such as Parcel Select and Parcel Post. However, many merchants prefer low-cost shipping options without sacrificing visibility of their parcels while in transit ("track and trace"). The US Postal Service does offer a limited "Delivery Confirmation" for even their lowest-cost package delivery services, but more robust tracking is currently not available through the federal agency

Accumulating Conveyor
Any conveyor designed to allow collection (accumulation) of material. May be roller, live roller, belt and gravity conveyors.

Acquisition Code
Numeric code assigned to material. Defines the source of material and determines priority for issue; that is, which material should be retrieved and used first. (Government-specific term.)

Ad Valorem

Adjustment
A change to the quantity of an on-hand item of inventory, either positive or negative. Adjustments can occur because of damages, missing or found inventory, quality control, and so on.

Advance shipping notice
A form which the vendor sends in response to a purchase order (PO). It lists the products in the shipment, the estimated time and date of arrival, and (optionally) carrier and payment data. Vendors may send the advance shipping notice in hard copy or electronically.

AGV
Automatic Guidance Vehicle. A robotic vehicle used to transport loads which communicates to the control system and follows a guide wire or marker in the floor.

Air Waybill

Aisle
The space between the storage rack frames in which an SRM, forklift, or person moves.

Aisle
The set of physical storage locations accessible by a single SRM.

Aisle Clearance
The clearance required between the SRM and/or a load on-board the SRM and loads stored in the rack structure.

Aisle Hardware
The support devices in the SRM aisle consisting of floor rail, upper guide rail, end stops, conductor bars and/or festoon, code plates, and end of aisle slowdowns.

Aisle Transfer Car
A vehicle for transferring an SRM from aisle to aisle, which normally runs on a rail or rails.

Alarm
A message that is displayed and recorded to signal that a change of status has occurred in the system. An alarm message usually alerts an operator to the fact that something has gone wrong. However, the message also might simply be informational.

Algorithm
A logic routine or set of rules used by the computer to make decisions or derive an answer, such as the storage location selection process for an SRM.

Algorithm

Alligator Lacing
Lacing attached to the belt with a hammer for the purposes of joining the ends of the belt together to form a continuous loop

Audit Trail
A historical account of transactions executed by an automated system. These transactions are typically listed in reverse order by date and time stamp. The extent of the history is typically limited by a predefined duration.

Automated Electrified Monorail
Abbreviated AEM. A system for carrying material between several locations. The device that actually carries the material moves along a single rail on which it rides or from which it is suspended. HK Systems manufactures a monorail called the SMARTTRAK. It uses the suspended monorail design.

Automated Guided Vehicle
Abbreviated as AGV. A vehicle equipped with automatic guidance equipment, either electromagnetic or optical. Such a vehicle is capable of following prescribed guide paths and may be equipped for vehicle programming and stop selection, blocking, and any other special functions required by the system.

Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV)   
An automated form of horizontal transportation for material handling in many applications.

Automated Guided Vehicle Controller
Abbreviated as AGVC. The controller that directs the real-time functions of AGV movement on the guidepath.

Automated Guided Vehicle Systems
Abbreviated as AGVS. The equipment and control system used to dispatch, control, monitor, and direct AGVs.

Automated Storage Retrieval Controller
Abbreviated as ASRC. The mechanism used to manage/control the movement of SRMs, receive load store/retrieve commands from the Real-Time Manager or the host computer system, and report store complete, retrieve complete, and SRM errors to the computer system.

Automated Storage/Retrieval System
Abbreviated as AS/RS or ASRS. 1) A system of storage racks served by automated storage and retrieval machines with computer—maintained location control. The control computer provides direction to the material handling equipment to move product into and out of the storage rack. 2) A combination of equipment and controls that handle, store, and retrieve materials with precision, accuracy, and speed under a defined degree of automation. Systems vary from relatively simple, manually controlled order-picking machines operating in small storage structures to large, computer-controlled storage and retrieval systems totally integrated into the manufacturing and distribution process.

A mounting assembly used to hold one conveyor upside down over another conveyor in order to squeeze or flatten the product

A group of ball transfers over which flat surface objects may be moved in any direction

A device in which a larger ball is mounted and retained on a hemispherical face of small balls.

Bar Code
A group of parallel black lines of identical length and various thickness printed on a light background. To a bar code reader, these lines represent letters and numbers that make up an identifying (ID) code.

Bar Code Label
A label attached to a component, assembly, kit, pallet, tote pan, or rack zone that can be read by a bar code reader.

Bar Code Reader
Abbreviated as BCR. A device that optically scans barcode symbols and converts the optical information into characters that can be interpreted by a computer.

A device used to “scan” a label imprinted with a barcode as a means of conveying the barcode to a computer.

Bare Pulley

The platform of the SRM that supports masts and contains the horizontal drive and idler wheels.

Batch Processing
1) A manufacturing technique in which parts are accumulated and processed together in a lot. 2) A computer technique in which transactions are accumulated and processed together in a lot.

Battery Changing Areas
Physical location designated for use to remove batteries, replace batteries, and charge batteries while the batteries are outside the AGV.

Bay
A horizontal address used by a SRM which depicts a vertical set of physical storage locations. Sometimes referred to as ‘column’.

Bay
1) A vertical column of storage locations within the rack on either side of the aisle in an AS/RS numbered from front to back. 2) A section of a building defined by adjacent building columns (e.g. 40’ bays).

Bearing
A machine part in or on which a shaft, axle, pin or other part rotates.

Bed
That part of a conveyor upon which the load rests or slides while being conveyed.

A flexible band placed around two or more pulleys for the purpose of transmitting motion, power or materials from one point to another.

A blade or brush caused to bear against the moving conveyor belt for the purpose of removing material sticking to the conveyor belt.

The length of belt, which passes a fixed point within a given time. It is usually expressed in terms of "feet per minute".

Abbreviated as BOL. A carrier's or shipper’s contract and receipt for goods, listing the goods being delivered.

Bill Weight

Bill-to
A type of entity to whom you send the bill for a transaction. The Shipment Order form allows you to explicitly specify a bill-to entity. You can also enter a bill-to entity in fields that don’t constrain the entity type, such as the Seller entity in a purchase order. You can create entities of the Bill-to type, and you can also fill in bill-to information for any type of entity.

Bin
1) As pertains to the HK750, this is a storage partition in a tote pan. 2) As pertains to the HK4000, this is a storage location within a rack. Also, a container which may hold one or more items and/or item types. A bin is kept in a storage location and can be subdivided into smaller compartments.

Capacity

Captive Container
1) A pallet typically constructed of one continuous piece of plywood usually without built-in fork truck access. 2) A pallet made to be used within one functional area of a material handling system, for example, only within the warehouse or only between receiving and a Unit-Load storage area.

Carousel
A series of linked bin locations mounted on a continuous oval horizontal or vertical track. When the carousel drive system is activated, the bins revolve, bringing the desired bin to the operator.

Carton
A tub, box, or other container of any size into which you pick one or more commodities. A carton can be a predefined UOM or a pick-to carton.

Cartonization
The ability to put multiple commodities from multiple orders into the same carton during picking.

Case

Center Drive
A drive assembly mounted underneath normally near the center of the conveyor, but may be placed anywhere in the conveyor length. Normally used in reversing or incline application.

Chain
A series of links pivotally joined together to form a medium for conveying or transmitting motion or power.

Chain Conveyor
A general classification of powered unit—handling conveyors in which the load- carrying surfaces are the side bars of a pair of` chains. The chains move along a guide track supported by a frame.

Chain Drive
A power transmission device employing a drive chain and sprockets.

Chain Guard
A covering or protection for drive or conveyor chains for safety purposes.

Chain Roller Conveyor
A conveyor in which the tread rollers have attached sprockets which are driven by a chain.

Chute
A trough through which objects are lowered by gravity. Can either be a slider bed or roller/wheel bed.

Distance from any part of a load or a moving machine to a stationary structure or another moving machine.

Cleat
An attachment fastened to the conveying surface to act as a pusher, support, check or trip, etc. to help propel material, parts or packages along the normal path of conveyor travel.

Cleated Belt
A belt having raised sections spaced uniformly to stabilize flow of material on belts operating on inclines. Cleats may be a part of the belt or fastened on.

A method of taking physical inventory where only a few items are counted at a time. Cycle count
An inventory monitoring process. In cycle counting by location, RF operators count the number of IDs in a location or range of locations. In cycle counting by ID, RF operators count the number of a particular load ID in the facility. Cycle counting identifies inventory discrepancies, missing or found inventory, damaged inventory, and so on.

A series circuit that includes sensors and switches used to detect unsafe or abnormal vehicle operating conditions. When any sensor or switch in the circuit opens, the command in process is aborted and the vehicle comes to an emergency stop (E-stop). The vehicle remains in an E-Stop condition as long as the E-chain circuit remains open.

Event
A designated position on the AGV guidepath that allows a specific activity to occur at the location. Events are one of two types: magnetic, or virtual. Magnetic events are physical events, because the vehicle sees a marker magnet. A virtual event is when the computer identifies a event that doesn't have a physical counterpart to which it is associated. An event is also a system action that is not dependent upon time.

Hot Back-up
This refers to a second computer which is available to complete the operation in the event of primary equipment failure. Load Deflection Allowance
The design specification that allows enough clearance so that if a load sags (when it is not continuously supported from the bottom) it does not interfere with 1) the top of any load supported located directly below it and 2) the SRM’s ability to retrieve it.

Load Height
The maximum overall dimension from the bottom of the pallet (or other Load-Carrying device i.e. bin) to the top of the load.

Load ID
The Load ID is a unique combination of numbers and/or letters that is assigned to a specific load. It is used to track and maintain the status of the load as it is moved within the system. The Load ID also can contain information about the load.

The person that is using a terminal uses this procedure to identify himself / herself to the computer system. Typically, the user must type in a user name and/or password. If the computer recognizes this information, the user is allowed to use the system. Also called Logon.

Lookup field

Lots
A group of inventory that was manufactured under the same conditions. Enterprise/EMS assigns a lot ID automatically to every product upon receipt, and also lets you assign identifying information, such as a dye lot or expiration date. You can track any product by its lot ID.

Pallet Collector/Dispenser

Pick
The request to pick or the act of picking a specific quantity of a given material to satisfy an order.

Pick
Associated with order picking, a transaction that results in material being removed from inventory.

Pick location
A type of location where you can pick a specified UOM for a specified product: for instance, a case of SKU #1. Pick locations may be authorized for multiple commodities and multiple UOMs. If there is insufficient quantity in the pick location to fill a pick order, Enterprise/EMS generates a demand replenishment. Also called a forward picking location.

Pick To ID
The bar coded ID on a carton, which contains licensed inventory. RF operators use cartons for picking and moving inventory.

Poly-vinyl chloride (PVC) covering for roller tubes to prevent product damage or marking. Usually (#70 durometer) green or (#90 durometer) red in color.

Primary Floor Driver
Device used for older Guide-Wire-Controlled (GWC) AGVs. Replaced by base station on Eagle AGVs. See also "Base Station." The floor driver that connects to the AGVC and to additional secondary floor drivers. It is the communication link between the AGVs and the AGVC.

Quality control
